Liam sighed aloud as the pounding on the door continued. He’d finally gotten into work-mode when his buzzer rang twice a few moments prior. He assumed someone let his visitor in the building, despite his lack of a response. He peered through the peephole and felt his breath catch in his throat, instantly recognizing Kim on the other side of the door. He took a deep breath and opened the door.
“What are you doing here?”
“Well, good evening to you too,” she said. The smell of booze rolled off of her lazily as she slipped by him.
“Are you drunk?”
“Just had a few drinks with some friends in the neighborhood. I missed you” Kim said happily. She grabbed a handful of him over his black sweatpants. His erection gave him away.
“Seems like you miss me too,” she said before putting her mouth on his. She was sweet, too sweet with a biting aftertaste.
Liam stepped from her grasp.
“Why are you here?”
“I missed you,” Kim repeated, still planting kisses on his bare neck and chest. He mustered up all his might and stepped away from her again.
“What’s wrong, baby?” She said in a low voice. Before he could continue, Kim had begun slowly peeling her clothes away.
“You don’t wanna be with me,” he said his eyes sliding down her frame as she pulled off the skintight jeans.
“I’m here now.”
“I don’t wanna fight, Lee,” she said. Her dark nipples were erect beneath the sheer material of her bodysuit, a strap dropping off her shoulder. The scent of her sex wafting between them Broke him. in a single motion, she wrapped her legs around him as he lifted her from the floor.
His bedroom was strides away, where he deposited his lover onto his bed. She spread her legs across the bed and slipped the thin material to the side, exposing her soaking entrance. His mouth watered at the taste, as he wrapped his lips around her. Kim groaned deep from her belly. Liam would love her over and over throughout the night, but it wouldn’t make a difference. She’d never change her mind about being with him.
Kim sighed after she’d successfully slipped from Liam’s apartment. As badly as she wanted to stay, real life wouldn’t stay on pause too much longer. She’d gone over the note she wrote over and over in her head, how agonizing it was to say those things, and believe them.
“Babe, what are you burning?” Phil said, straightening his tie.
“Oh shit!” Kim said, snatching the eggs off the stove & depositing the skillet into the sink.
“So much for breakfast…” she said. Phil didn’t detect the sad tone in her voice and just kissed her on the cheek.
“It’s cool. I’m late anyway. I can still drop the boys off to school,” Phil said. He stopped in his tracks and turned to seize his wife by the waist.
“You get some rest, baby girl…Daddy’s home for the weekend,” he grinned before kissing her.
“I love you,” she said, placing her hands on either side of his face.
She’d recognized the car sitting two houses down as Phil piled in the kids & drove away. She smiled and waved to her family as they pulled away, masking the nervous wreck that had compiled in her chest. She gathered what was left of her nerve as the familiar form leapt from the car and bound up the walkway.
“What are you doing here?”
“Keep your voice down,” she snapped, her voice sharp and foreign in Liam’s ears.
She pushed him inside before any of her nosy neighbors could investigate.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
“I could ask the same of you!”
Kim clammed up, running her hands through her hair.
“You can’t be here,” she said, pacing back and forth in the hallway. She could feel herself unraveling.
“No, fuck that, I want some answers. NOW.”
“What do you want me to say?! I told you we were done!”
“You can’t break up with your mistress with a note, Kim!”
She fell silent. She’d known it was a shitty thing to do but, in this situation, it was necessary.
“I followed you here, thinking I was a crazy person!” Liam said, his hands on his hips. He wanted to laugh. He wanted to cry. He wanted to burn the mini mansion to the ground.
“I’m sorry. If it means anything, I really do care for you and this isn’t easy for me either.” Liam scoffed at her announcement and sat on the stairs next to her. Kim returned his annoyance when she realized he wouldn’t leave without an explanation.
“It just happened, ok! You and I met when Phil and I were in a bad place.”
“So what? You thought you’d screw the first guy you met to get back at him?”
“That’s not fair.”
“You really wanna talk about fair right now?” Kim sighed before continuing.
“You were different. New. Exciting. I tried my hardest to avoid you but it only made me more alluring to you. I tried to tell you the truth maybe 100 times but it never came out. After a while, it was too late and we were…I just didn’t see the point.”
“You could’ve told me at any time. I deserved to know.”
“Liam, every moment with you was like a dream. I was myself with you, vulnerable, completely bare and you loved me anyway.”
“So why couldn’t you tell me the truth?”
“I didn’t want it to be real. For a long time, you weren’t. The longer I stayed with you, the farther I got away from my family and I just couldn’t take that risk anymore. My boys…” Kim said, glancing at the family photo on the table.
Her vulnerability only made her more beautiful, forcing him deeper into the desperate ocean of love he’d carried for her. He reached out and linked his fingers through hers, kissing the smooth skin on the top of her hand. He loved her, but he refused to drown for her.
